Rockies walked off for second-straight night

Rockies Report, Game 14:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Padres first baseman Gavin Sheets crushed a 100-MPH Juan Mejia fastball that settled near the center of the strike zone, launching it 434 feet over the right-center field fence for a three-run homer that dealt the Rockies a 5-2 walk-off defeat at Petco Park on Friday night.

It was Sheets’ second homer of the night; he had one of two solo blasts in the fifth inning as all of San Diego’s runs came via the long ball.

Sheets’ game-ending shot wiped out Colorado’s eighth-inning rally from a 2-0 deficit, punctuated by three-straight two-out singles from Hunter Goodman, Tyler Freeman and Jordan Beck, with the hits from Goodman and Beck driving in the runs that tied the score.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer inserted Goodman as a pinch hitter in the designated-hitter slot after holding him out of the lineup due to a lacerated finger suffered when Randy Vásquez plunked him in Thursday night’s season opener. Brett Sullivan handled catching duties in Goodman’s place Friday night, going 0-for-3.

Beck’s eighth-inning RBI also came in a pinch-hitting role.

Colorado fell to 6-8.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Tomoyuki Sugano delivered his second-consecutive quality start, scattering four hits over six innings with no walks. But the long ball is his one flaw, as his streak of games with at least one home run allowed extended to nine, dating back to Aug. 25 of last year.

In that span, Sugano’s HR/9 rate is 3.40, including 2.16 in four Colorado starts. But 2.16 is also Sugano’s ERA so far this season, as that represents the sum total of runs he’s allowed. His WHIP is a microscopic 0.78.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Sheets delivered the walk-off shot.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 8 — Number of different Rockies with exactly one hit Friday night. The only spots in the lineup that failed to reach base were the 8 and 9 holes; Sullivan and third baseman Kyle Karros combined to go 0-for-6.
