Ahead of Friday’s Opening Day for the Colorado Rockies, the club made several roster moves with one of their pitchers being placed the injured list after just one start.
Veteran left-hander Jose Quintana is getting shelved with a right hamstring strain. He made his Rockies debut in Colorado’s 4-3 loss in Miami on March 29, where he went four-plus innings, allowing two earned runs while he walked four and struck out two. The 15-year MLB arm signed a one-year deal for $6 million with the Rockies this offseason.
In his place is left-hander Valente Bellozo, who will likely make his Rockies debut in the coming days after struggling in his first appearance with Triple-A Albuquerque on March 28. He threw 1.5 innings to a 6.32 ERA, coming over from the Marlins system, where he has played in 45 big league games in the past two years.
The Rockies also made more space on their roster by sending down Ryan Ritter. The right-handed infielder had played in all six games so far mostly as a pinch hitter and runner, getting one hit in seven plate appearances. The 25-year-old was okay in 60 games for the Rockies during his debut season in the show.
Those three moves are official but it leaves the Rockies with one opening on their active roster.
That opening will likely be filled Mickey Moniak, who started the year on the injured list with a sprain to his right index finger. The 24-year-old was hurt in his final spring game, dicing back to first base on a pickoff attempt. The former Angels top prospect, who has bounced around, was solid for the Rockies last summer. He hit .270 with 24 home runs and 68 RBIs in 130 games across all three outfield spots.
The Colorado Rockies announced today the following transactions:
-Placed LHP Jose Quintana on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 30 (right hamstring strain).
-Recalled RHP Valente Bellozo (#56) from Triple-A Albuquerque.
-Optioned INF/OF Ryan Ritter to Triple-A…— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) April 2, 2026
