Broncos coach Sean Payton had a message he wanted to get across at the NFL Annual Meeting

PHOENIX — When Broncos coach Sean Payton answers media questions after a few weeks out of the limelight, he often has a point he wants to convey.

Tuesday at the NFL Annual Meeting, it was this: Where the Broncos stand, they’re not in the game of playing to the masses in the “free-agent frenzy.” Not anymore, at least.

Three years ago, yes, when the team was coming off of a 5-12 season, lacked first- and second-round draft choices and needed shock treatment. But after a 14-3 campaign, the best path toward improvement wasn’t going to be with the type of players Payton has compared with “>sofas at garage sales.

Payton dove into why the Broncos focused on retention, leaving their only additions to be targeted — and in the case of Jaylen Waddle, a player NOT available from the NFL’s edition of a flea market.
