According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, when Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb assumed the play-calling reins this offseason, he tweaked some of the offensive verbiage.
Glazer reported this during the FOX NFL Sunday pregame show prior to the slate of Week 6 Sunday-afternoon games.
Saying that he “asked a bunch of people in the Broncos about that,” Glazer broke down the alterations thusly:
“I didn’t know this until this past week, is when Davis Webb took over, he completely changed the terminology on the offensive side of the ball for Bo Nix,” Glazer said.
“Now that Sean Payton’s taken it back over, it’s like going back to a whole different language that you used to know.”

Glazer suggested that Bo Nix’s ragged start to the season could stem in part because of the changes.
“So, I think at this point, man, his head is just spinning,” Glazer said.
Among 30 quarterbacks with at least 100 plays to their name this season, Nix went into Sunday’s play 28th in ESPN QBR, 23rd in EPA per play, 26th in success rate, 30th in intended air yards per attempt and 26th in on-target percentage.

Continued Glazer: “Sean Payton is like, ‘I have confidence that [Nix] is going to get back to the Bo Nix that we saw in the last couple of years.’
Denver Sports contributor James Palmer later tweeted that Webb changed “about 30 percent” of the offensive terminology in order to create “more of a rhyme or reason to some formations to make them more current.”
The Broncos offense has struggled throughout the season, and since Payton assumed play-calling reins from Webb in advance of last week’s 23-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Broncos have averaged just 196 yards of total offense per game.
Over the course of the entire season, the Broncos rank 31st in total offense, 25th in EPA per play and 29th in success rate. They rank 19th in offensive DVOA, which accounts for the quality of their opponents.
