Denver Summit FC smashes NWSL attendance record in home opener

Denver Summit FC‘s first home match didn’t just break the NWSL’s single-game attendance record — it destroyed it.

The club attracted 63,004 fans to Empower Field at Mile High for its initial contest in the Mile High City against the Washington Spirit, demolishing the previous mark of 40,091 set by Bay FC for a game last year at Oracle Park in San Francisco last August.

Despite the spirit and pageantry, the team’s first home goal will have to wait. After earning a draw and a win from three road matches earlier this month, the Spirit and Summit played to a 0-0 draw.

Summit’s next two home games will be at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, which it will share with the Colorado Rapids. After a road match at San Diego, it returns home April 25.

The team then moves into its temporary home, Centennial Stadium, making its debut there July 3 after the NWSL season takes a June pause during the men’s World Cup. Denver’s final 12 home matches will take place at the under-construction venue near Denver Broncos headquarters.
