Report: Warren Sapp is leaving Coach Prime’s Buffs staff

The Colorado Buffaloes defensive staff is losing an important coach for the second straight day, and this one has a gold jacket.

Hall of Famer Warren Sapp is out in Boulder, leaving Deion Sanders’ staff after two years working with Coach Prime.

“CU Athletics thanks Warren for his contributions to our football program over the last two seasons and for his commitment to our student-athletes,” CU told BuffZone.

The news was first reported by Guerilla Sports.

Sapp had been hired as a graduate assistant in 2024, working with the big boys on the defensive side. Sapp earned a promotion to defensive pass rush coordinator for the 2025 season.

Sapp, 53, is one of the best defensive linemen in football history. He was an All-American at Miami and then spent 13 years in the NFL creating havoc on offenses. He was the league’s defensive player of the year in 1999, earning seven trips to the Pro Bowl and one Super Bowl ring as part of his Hall of Fame career.

Sapp, who had never coached before coming to CU, worked with defensive line coach Domata Peko. The former NFL player, who spent 15 years in the league, left earlier this offseason to take a job with the Steelers.

In addition to the two of Sapp and Peko who left the Buffs late in the offseason, defensive coordinator Robert Livingston bolted for the Broncos on Wednesday. Spring practice for Sanders fourth year starts Monday.
