After a long offseason, Colorado Buffaloes football is officially back in action at Folsom Field on Friday night. Year three of the Coach Prime era will kick off in the national spotlight once again as the Buffs host a tough opening opponent in Georgia Tech.
This is the first-ever meeting for the two programs that split the national championship back in 1990 due to an indifference between the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll, a moment in time that has forever tied these two universities to one another despite never clashing on the gridiron.
There are a lot of questions surrounding a Buffaloes team that is going to look a whole lot different than it did the first two years under Coach Prime. Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders are no longer in town to carry the weight of the load for the team, so it will be up to a bunch of new faces to step up and lead the black and gold to victory.

Friday night’s season opener is scheduled to kick off at 6:05 p.m. MDT from Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado. Fans at home can catch the game on ESPN. For fans that are heading to the stadium for the game, the national anthem and the ensuing flyover is scheduled to take place 14 minutes prior. There will be no Ralphie Run, as Ralphie VII has not completed her training to carry on one of the greatest traditions in college football.

What to watch for in Colorado vs. Georgia Tech
On offense, it’s all about running the football for Colorado. Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter is slated to get the start for the Buffs on Friday, and his elite running ability should be able to unlock a new level that this offense hasn’t seen in two years with Prime. The offensive line has emphasized how they want to run the ball, the running backs have emphasized how they want to run the ball and the coaching staff has emphasized how they want to run the ball. Similar things were said last season, so nothing is true until Pat Shurmur and this CU offense proves that they’re committed to doing so.
Coach Prime also hinted at the possibility of true freshman quarterback Julian Lewis getting a hint of game action in his college debut, but the game “predicates” that.
On defense, it’s all about communication. Earlier in fall camp, defensive backs Preston Hodge and Carter Stoutmire emphasized the importance of communicating with one another before the snap and throughout the play, as Georgia Tech runs an offense that uses a lot of eye candy before the snap to try and throw off opposing secondaries. Quarterback Haynes King has the ability to light up the field through the air and on the ground, while running back Jamal Haynes and wide receiver Eric Rivers will likely be the two skill players to lead the charge.
This season can be a great one for Coach Prime and the Buffs, and Friday night will show what kind of season this team is capable of putting together. If they answer all the questions that have been asked all offseason, they can easily be a dark horse contender in the Big 12. If not, this season might be a step back from the magic that CU produced in 2024.
