Rockies drop sixth in a row, this one in walk-off fashion

Rockies Report, Game 116:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Back-to-back doubles by Gerardo Perdomo and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. off Jimmy Herget in the ninth inning completed Arizona’s comeback from a 4-1 deficit and doomed the Rockies to a 6-5 loss in front of 38,337 at Chase Field on Saturday night.

That completed a rally that saw Arizona overturn a lead that the Rox built early on the strength a Brenton Doyle two-run homer, a Kyle Farmer RBI single and a Warming Bernabel single that scored Ezequiel Tovar.

Arizona took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning, chasing starter Bradley Blalock in the process, but Tovar got Colorado back in front in the sixth, driving in Farmer, who had reached base on a walk earlier in the inning.

But the Rox would score no more despite having a runner on first base with one out in each of the next two innings. Those lost chances proved costly as Arizona finally cashed in and finished off the Rox to clinch a series win after Friday night’s series-opening win.

Rookie Kyle Karros had a hit for the second consecutive night after his Friday promotion from AAA Albuquerque. Doyle and Tovar each had two hits.

Colorado is 30-86.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Bradley Blalock couldn’t hold on to the early advantage given him, and ended up going just 4 2/3 innings, laboring to 96 pitches before being relieved by Dugan Darnell in the fifth inning.

It was his shortest major-league start in his last five outings, since going just 3 2/3 innings in the 21-0 shellacking against San Diego on May 10. Since then, he’d never failed to go at least 5 1/3 innings. However, he has allowed at least five earned runs in each of his last three starts after giving up just three earned runs over three July starts.

Tovar’s sixth-inning RBI single took Blalock off the hook; he remains at 1-3.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Gurriel doubled home Perdomo in the ninth.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 2 — Double plays hit into by the Rockies in the final three innings Saturday. Karros and Tyler Freeman each hit into 6-4-3 twin killings that ended half-innings for the Rox.

WHAT’S NEXT: Colorado tries to salvage the finale in its last game at Chase Field this season. Tanner Gordon starts for the Rockies; the Snakes will turn to Brandon Pfaadt. First pitch will be at 2:10 p.m. MDT.
