Broncos head coach Sean Payton appreciates no ‘noise’ from players on contracts

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is in a chatty mood this summer.

A day after a 32-minute press conference following a training camp practice, he went for another 23.5 minutes on Saturday.

Payton is in a good spirits, and rightfully so.

The Broncos just got their second huge contract done in the last week, this time paying stud defensive lineman Zach Allen. Denver gave him a four-year extension worth more than $100 million, with $69.5 million guaranteed.

And Sean Payton knows there’s drama around the NFL about new deals, just look at Washington and Dallas, but is glad it isn’t happening here.

“What I appreciate most is these guys were here practicing, there was none of the noise and potential distractions that can take place. It’s always difficult when you’re talking about somebody’s money and I understand that,” Payton said.

In terms of how this extension got done, Payton first praised Allen then offered some details.

“You get an exceptional player, also with the makeup, much like Courtland (Sutton),” Payton said. “Two days ago I said to him ‘it appears the ships can see each other on their horizon.’ And then I asked him ‘how long is the horizon?’ His answer bothered me he said ’20 miles.’ It’s eight miles.”

Regardless, the ships reached each other quickly, and now Allen can play his prime as a member of the Broncos as they chase a Super Bowl.

“It’s a credit to both sides. There’s a lot that goes into it. He’s excited and I think the players are genuinely excited for him when they see something like that happens. So, that’s a good thing for the Broncos,” Payton said.

Sean Payton really likes this Denver team. There’s no doubt at that. And with guys getting paid big, this core should play together for the foreseeable future
