Coach Prime isn’t naming a starting QB yet to replace Shedeur Sanders

Coach Prime was at the podium at Big 12 Media Days on Wednesday.

And while his health battles were the No. 1 story, something Deion Sanders declined to elaborate on, who his starting QB will be during the 2025 season was No. 2.

Who is going to replace Shedeur Sanders?

We didn’t get an answer on that, either.

Both veteran Kaidon Salter and freshman Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis will have a shot at the job, which Coach Prime made clear when a reporter started a question about them.

“We brought both of them because I don’t know which one is gonna start,” Sanders said.

That was followed up by a question asking if he’d be okay playing two quarterbacks this season.

“Yeah, as long as they’re doing their jobs and we’re winning. We definitely want to continue to develop Ju Ju, but Kaidon is unbelievable. Kaidon is off the chain. He’s been there, done that. He can get the job done. I wouldn’t have brought him here if I didn’t trust him,” Sanders said.

Salter brings experience and big numbers to CU. The senior threw for 5,889 yards, 56 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions, while also rushing for 2,006 yards and 21 touchdowns in 35 career games at Liberty. He landed with the Buffs last December.

Meanwhile, Lewis was the No. 6 recruit in the nation out of high school and was a monster get for Coach Prime and Colorado. A lot of fans would like to see him play right away.

“But Ju Ju is coming around the mountain when he comes,” Sanders said. “I love him, I love what he brings to the table. I don’t know how it’s going to play out, as long as it plays out. We can’t lose either way with either of those two.”

It sounds like it’ll be a competition this summer, one that Coach Prime would like settled before CU’s first game on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech.

Salter and Lewis don’t have quite the same buzz as Shedeur Sanders, but they’re both intriguing players in their own ways.

Salter went on ESPN2 during Big 12 Media Days and was complimentary of Lewis.

“I appreciate his confidence,” Salter said. “He comes to work every day. He’s a natural talent (and) athlete. He’s a natural thrower. There’s nothing that you can’t not like about him.”

Salter went on to add he knows it’s a competition, but right now, both he and Lewis are having fun with it.
