Report: Teams keep calling Avalanche about moving Charlie Coyle

The Colorado Avalanche acquired Charlie Coyle via trade back in March, and despite an underwhelming playoff performance, teams have been calling Colorado about potentially trading the veteran center

The Colorado Avalanche have made most of the necessary moves for the offseason, highlighted by the Brock Nelson contract extension that was agreed upon earlier this month. While they missed out on the Jonathan Toews sweepstakes last week, they didn’t exactly need the veteran due to the center depth they already have on the roster.

One of those centers is Charlie Coyle, who was acquired via trade back at the deadline. Coyle orchestrated the third line for the Avalanche throughout the home stretch of the regular season and in the playoffs, and did a better job than what Casey Mittelstadt did. In 19 regular season games, he had 13 points (2G, 11A), giving Avalanche fans a new spark of hope after the center depth had been an issue for so long.

However, his luck ran out in the postseason, as he had just one assist in seven playoff games and was a -4.

The Avalanche have a very bleak salary cap situation after the Nelson extension, the worst in the league, with just $1.2 million in cap space available with a couple key players poised to hit the free agent market. One avenue to creating more space could be trading Coyle just months after general manager Chris MacFarland went out of his way to snag him from the Boston Bruins. Coyle is entering the final year of his contract, and is set to make $5.25 million this year on the ice.

However, the Avalanche aren’t budging on their third line center. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Avalanche have received a plethora of calls regarding the 33-year-old, but haven’t budged on a potential exchange.

“The Avalanche made it clear they don’t need to do anything. Other teams keep calling, though,” Friedman said recently.

Remember, Colorado gave up Mittelstadt, another player and a second round pick in this year’s draft, a pretty hefty haul for a third line guy and more of a haul than the Flyers just gave up for Trevor Zegras, who is a younger and more talented player than Coyle. If they were to try and flip him again, it would be unlikely that they would get a haul that would make up for the original trade back in March, which makes sense as to why they’re staying put with what they’ve got.

At the very least, this report shows fans of the burgundy and blue that their front office is doing something at the moment, especially since they don’t have a pick in the upcoming NHL draft until the fourth round thanks to this trade. Many fans still aren’t happy with MacFarland after the whole Mikko Rantanen saga went down, and every move or decision he makes will be criticized from here on out as the franchise chases a fourth Stanley Cup.
