Russell Wilson’s return date to the Mile High City is set

Russell Wilson was supposed to make his return to Denver in Week 2 last season to take on the Broncos, but he was on the sideline holding a clipboard for the Pittsburgh Steelers as he was recovering from a calf injury that he suffered in training camp. Broncos fans, whether they were planning on cheering him on or booing him, were disappointed that they would have to wait to see their former signal caller step on the field, and were left wondering if they would get the chance to see him return to Denver.

Their questions were answered Wednesday, as Week 7 will be week that the New York Giants and Wilson will travel to Denver to take on the Denver Broncos. The game will be in the afternoon window on Sunday, October 19.

Art Stapleton of northjersey.com was the first to report the news.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll recently said that the 2013 Super Bowl champion will be the team’s starting quarterback to kick off the spring, and his veteran experience should have him as the Week 1 starter for the G-Men.

Wilson, 36, did not have the best years of his career with the Broncos in 2022 and 2023 as he quickly became one of the worst contracts in the entire NFL before the Broncos released him in March last year. He was on a 5-year, $242.6 million contract, and the franchise took an $85 million dead money hit to get him off the roster, the biggest dead cap hit in NFL history at the time.

Wilson had two different head coaches, along with a few weeks of an interim coach, during his time in Denver, and led the Broncos to a 11-19 record as the starter. He threw for 6,594 yards, 42 touchdowns and 19 interceptions while completing 63.3% of his passes. While the stats don’t look too bad, the product on the field was, as the Broncos had one of the most painful offenses to watch in both years.

In 2022, the Broncos led the NFL in punts with 96, an indicator of how inept the offense was that year under Nathaniel Hackett. In 2023, the Broncos had the ninth-most punts in the league and were in the bottom-10 in passing offense.

While it’s no guarantee that Wilson will be the starter when the Giants come to Denver, it’s very likely that he will be barring injuries. New York signed journeyman quarterback Jameis Winston and drafted Jaxson Dart in the first round of the NFL Draft over Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, but all signs point to those two being behind Wilson on the depth chart.

If Wilson does take the field on October 19, Empower Field at Mile High will be loud, and it will be hostile for the former Broncos quarterback.

The full NFL schedule will be released at 6 p.m. Denver time on Wednesday. For the Broncos, a few games have been announced already, including a showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas night.
