Rockies owner Dick Monfort sets extremely mediocre bar for 2023 season

Playoffs?!

Forget that. Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort will be happy if his team wins as many times as it loses in 2023.

Speaking at an event in Greeley on Saturday morning, the man who’s never led the team to a division title in its entire existence, set an extremely mediocre bar for the upcoming season.

At least he’s being honest? The Rockies have done almost nothing in free agency, barely improving a roster that won just 68 games a season ago. Where Monfort thinks those extra 13 wins are coming from is beyond me, but at least he’s not fooling himself or the fans.

On the other side of the coin, this is disappointing. Coors Field is a beautiful ballpark and will attract crowds no matter what, but it’d also be nice if the Rockies could consistently field a winner. They haven’t since 2018, which is coincidentally the last time they made the playoffs.

Long gone are the days of Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story, as the Rockies roster might be the most anonymous its ever been entering 2023. The team will need Kris Bryant to produce to the level of his insane contract, Ryan McMahon to bounce-back and some unexpected pitchers to step up.

If not, it could be another long season at 20th and Blake. Or maybe, just maybe, even a .500 one.
