Report: Raiders may keep blowing it up, move on from Waller and Renfrow

Jan 24, 2023, 3:14 PM

Hurricane Josh McDaniels might strike again.

We know the Las Vegas Raiders will be moving on from QB Derek Carr, a decision that feels like McDaniels doing. The most-hated former Broncos head coach of all-time, it’s nice to see McDaniels wreck one of Denver’s biggest rivals.

A new report on Tuesday from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggests Carr might not be the only one heading out of town. Per Fowler, McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler will continue to “aggressively tweak the roster” this offseason.

“McDaniels is big on ‘culture fits’ and will want his own guys,” Fowler writes. “Teams will be keeping an eye on tight end Darren Waller and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow in that process.”

Waller and Renfrow are obviously solid weapons, and probably the second and third best receiving options on that team behind Davante Adams. If McDaniels wants to get rid of dudes who score touchdowns and make plays, you won’t get any complaints out of Broncos Country.

And this does raise the obvious question, could they be potential fits in Denver? Tight end Greg Dulcich had a very solid rookie year, so Waller probably doesn’t make a lot of sense, but Renfrow could be worth exploring. By the end of the season it felt like QB Russell Wilson was out of weapons, and adding a guy like Renfrow could help.

Renfrow had a down year in 2022, only catching 36 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns. He played in just 10 games. However, he was great in 2021, going for more than 1,000 yards, catching more than 100 passes and finding the end zone nine times. If Renfrow can re-gain that form, he’s a borderline Pro Bowl guy.

It’s McDaniels, though, so we know this will be unpredictable. Would he make a trade within the AFC West? Perhaps, because he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. It’ll be worth keeping an eye on as the offseason gets rolling in fewer than two months.

If the Raiders want to throw valuable players away, the Broncos and others will be glad to pick them up.
