Hackett addresses why the Broncos only have one Pro Bowl representative

Dec 22, 2022, 12:04 PM | Updated: 12:09 pm

On Wednesday night, the NFL announced the Broncos will have only on Pro Bowl representative in 2022.

That honor goes to cornerback Pat Surtain II, with safety Justin Simmons named as an alternate.

And one is better than none, as that’s how many Denver had selected in 2021. That broke a 41-year streak of the Broncos having at least one player picked for the all-star game.

On Thursday, head coach Nathaniel Hackett was asked why he thinks Denver didn’t have more guys in the mix. At 4-10, the answer seems fairly obvious.

“I think with great players, you want to get those wins. And there’s more guys that we have on this team (deserving of the honor). We’ve got to win more games to get more guys on the Pro Bowl,” Hackett said. “I’m biased with a lot of the guys on our team, but very happy for Pat and for Justin.”

Hackett was asked, specifically, what other players should’ve made the Pro Bowl in his eyes. He had an opportunity to campaign for certain guys, but instead took a broad view of the question.

“I’m biased, so I think everybody should be considered for that. But we’ve got to win more games so that more discussion can happen there. I mean, there’s so many guys that have done such a great job for us. We’ve just got to win some more football games first,” Hackett said.

Whatever happens in the final three games won’t matter for the Broncos this season, unless an enormous amount of players drop out and the NFL needs replacements beyond the alternates. So, that means win more games in 2023 for Hackett’s words to ring true.

And whether or not he’s the coach of the Broncos for that season remains to be seen.
