Hackett heaps praise on Chiefs and Mahomes, how “fun to watch” they are

Dec 8, 2022, 12:09 PM

The Broncos have arguably their toughest test of the season on Sunday.

And considering 9-3 Kansas City is head to town to face a 3-9 Denver team, this one could get ugly. Not only do the Broncos have the worst offense in the NFL at 13.8 points per game, the Chiefs have the best. KC leads the league in yards per game with 423.3 and points per game with 29.2 a contest.

Denver’s lost 13 in a row to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, arguably the best player in the NFL. He’s beyond special, and anyone with a functioning brain knows that. When it’s all said and done, he’ll likely go down as one of the best QBs to ever the play the game.

So, that’s the task at hand for the Broncos, and head coach Nathaniel Hackett knows it. At his press conference on Thursday, Hackett heaped praised on Kansas City. When asked if it’s surprising they might be even better without wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who’s now a Dolphin, Hackett pointed back to Mahomes.

“I mean, they’re a really good offense. They were with Tyreek,” Hackett said. “In the end, that quarterback there, he plays at a high level. They do a great job blocking it up for him, running the football, passing the ball, extending plays, running around, scrambling. It’s fun to watch. Unfortunately, we’re going to be going against them. We don’t want it to be fun to watch this week.”

The Chiefs are indeed fun to watch for casual NFL fans. And even Broncos fans can appreciate how good Mahomes and Andy Reid are at executing a game-plan. But just like Hackett said on Wednesday he’s not worried about the long losing streak, he couldn’t help but gush about KC a day later. That last sentence at least saved the answer.

Again, the head coach of the Broncos should hate the Raiders. They should want to stop an embarrassing streak of defeats to a bitter rival. And they probably shouldn’t tell everyone how much they enjoy watching the Chiefs.

But at this point, this is just who Hackett is. He’s relentlessly positive, even when it comes to franchises that Denver fans loathe.

We know that by now, and it doesn’t seem likely to change. At least not with Hackett in charge.
