Adam Schefter explains why the Broncos traded Bradley Chubb to Miami

Nov 1, 2022, 1:08 PM

The Broncos made a big trade before the NFL trade deadline hit on Tuesday afternoon.

Denver is sending former No. 5 overall pick Bradley Chubb to the Dolphins, in exchange for a package that includes a first-round pick and running back Chase Edmonds. The Broncos will have also give Miami a fifth-round pick in 2025 and get back a fourth-round selection in 2024.

The first-round pick belongs to the San Francisco 49ers, so it could be late in the round. The Niners look like Super Bowl contenders.

Right after the news of the trade broke, ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined Zach Bye and James Merilatt, in for Brandon Stokley, on 104.3 The Fan to discuss how and why it happened.

“It’s quite a lot for the Broncos to get back in return. When we were on yesterday, I said to you that Denver had a one (first-round pick) in the offer. That one was there, they took the one. When you set down this path, sometimes it’s hard to turn back. And the Broncos had a decision to make today. Trade Bradley Chubb for this type of package, which I knew was in the works, or keep him and sign him to a long-term extension,” Schefter said.

The Broncos opted to trade Chubb instead of give him a big deal. With Randy Gregory already locked up to a huge contract, and Baron Browning emerging as a star, it makes sense. Throw in 2022 second-round pick Nik Bonitto and Denver has a lot of weapons rushing the QB.

“Those were their options,” Schefter continued. “And if you’re keeping Bradley Chubb you’re looking at giving him a deal in excess of $100 million, over $20 million a year. And he’s a great player, he’s a leader in that locker room and there’s no doubt he’s going to be missed. But the Broncos looked at the return and said ‘this is something that we are wise in doing.’ And so they have agreed to the trade with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins get the pass-rusher that they covet, the Broncos get the picks that they covet and we have the biggest trade on a day that’s been full of them so far.”

Schefter added he expects the Dolphins and Chubb will hammer out a big contract extension very soon.

There will be plenty more reaction to come, but there’s Schefter’s explanation of why Denver GM George Paton pulled the trigger on this deal.
