There’s no doubt the struggling CU football program needs a jolt of energy.

Sitting at 0-5 and losing every game by at least 23 points, the Buffs finally made a change on Sunday. Former head coach Karl Dorrell was fired, and the school had to pay him $8.7 million just go away.

It was time for a change, with Dorrell’s CU squad looking absolutely pitiful week after week. The usually calm Dorrell rarely displayed much energy or passion, at least publicly. That won’t be the case for interim head coach Mike Sanford.

The Buffs posted a video of Sanford leading practice and meetings on Tuesday, and let’s just say he’s a nice change of pace from Dorrell. This guy makes you want to run through a wall.

How about that? Doing pushups with the guys and constantly shouting positive reinforcement? What a novel concept. CU isn’t going to get more talented overnight, but at least Sanford is bringing the juice.

And this is how he’s always been. Brian Howell, who covers the team, shared a great story about Sanford at a previous job.

Ha! If Sanford does indeed tear his other meniscus, that means things have turned around for the Buffs. Or at least they didn’t go winless. That should be the goal at this point, getting just one victory.

Sanford’s off to a good start, but the energy can only take you so far. Now it’s up to the players to do their part.
