Broncos launch first girls high school flag football league in Colorado

Sep 9, 2022, 4:18 PM

The Denver Broncos are helping grow the game of football across all ages and genders.

The team announced on Friday it launched the first-ever high school girls flag football league in Colorado. The Broncos worked with CHSAA to start the three-year pilot program. The hope is the sport is eventually sanctioned by CHSAA and played all across Colorado. Right now Cherry Creek, Denver and Jeffco schools have teams participating.

“The Denver Broncos are thrilled to have this opportunity to help bring girls high school flag to 25 high schools throughout the Denver Metro Area,” Bobby Mestas, Broncos Director of Youth & High School Football, said in a release. “The districts, the schools and the Colorado High School Activities Association have been tremendous partners thus far and we’re excited to offer the sport of football to more than 500 female student athletes this fall.”

The 25 schools started participating in practices on Tuesday, with a Jamboree slated for Saturday at All-City Stadium. Jamborees will take place every Saturday with a minimum of three games played per school.

District postseason tournaments begin on Saturday, October 8, where eight teams will advance to play in a single-elimination championship tournament held at the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse on Saturday, October 15. The championship team will be honored at the Broncos’ game vs. Arizona on December 18.

“The Colorado High School Activities Association is proud to partner with the Denver Broncos and our high schools as we look to promote this new opportunity for female participation in flag football,” CHSAA Commissioner Mike Krueger said in the release. “Flag football is a fast, fun and exciting way to experience the game of football, and we are thrilled that girls in Broncos Country will have the chance to participate in this experience first-hand.”

Each team received home and away jersey provided by Nike, at no cost to the schools. For a full list of high schools participating in the program, click here.
