Tim Tebow gets into sports team ownership, buys part of future soccer club

Aug 31, 2022, 12:03 PM

Tim Tebow’s football career is getting resurrected where his football career ended.

The former Denver Broncos quarterback turned broadcaster turned minor league baseball player turned Jacksonville Jaguars tryout tight end is getting back into the game, joining an ownership group for a new United Soccer League franchise planned for Jacksonville.

Tebow’s pro football career may be over as a player, but his ownership of club football (as the Europeans say) is just about to kick off.

JAXUSL is expected to begin playing in the second-tier U.S. pro league in 2025, the USL announced earlier this week.

The USL, which has no affiliation to MLS, currently has 27 teams with expansion plans for California, Iowa, Louisiana and other regions.

HCI Group CEO Ricky Caplin will lead Tebow’s team, with Steve Livingstone and  Antonio “Tony” Allegretti joining the ownership group.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the new ownership group that seeks to bring some incredible pro teams and world-class facilities to our area that will be accessible to the whole community,” Tebow said in a statement. “I’d like to thank Ricky, Steve, and Tony for presenting this opportunity, which I look forward to being directly involved in and with my Foundation.”

JAXUSL is yet to pick a name, holding a naming competition with fan input.

Once a first-round draft pick of the Broncos, Tebow spent two seasons in Denver. He started 14 games, leading the Broncos to six fourth-quarter comebacks and an overtime playoff win against the Steelers.

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks represent the Centennial State in the USL Championship. The Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC are in USL League One which is a tier below the Switchbacks and Tebow’s soon-to-be team.
