The not very good Rockies have a sudden bright spot

The Colorado Rockies just had a terrible homestand, getting swept in a four-game series by the Atlanta Braves to fall to 23-31 and into last place

One of Colorado’s two wins this past week at home came thanks to a walk-off home run by Brendan Rodgers. The Rockies’ second basemen has turned his season around over the past five weeks and finished off the homestand with a three-hit, three RBI, home run and double game on Sunday. The performance earned Rodgers the award for National League Player of the Week.

Rodgers began the season with just four hits in his first 14 games. The slumping 25-year-old slashed .078/.172/.098 with only a single run driven in and a lone extra-base hit. He had the worst OPS in MLB by nearly 60 points two weeks in.

Before Rodgers played in his 15th game of the season, he sat out four days due to back pain that he said was spurred by a bad hotel bed.

Since May 1, Rodgers has been on a tear. Over those 30 games, Rodgers is slashing .344/.380/.566, good for the 10th best OPS in baseball.

Simply put, Rodgers started the season as the worst hitter in MLB and since he’s been one of the best.

There’s not a ton in the data that shows Rodgers has made a big change. He’s just making contact more often and hitting the ball hard. The last several weeks have shown that Rodgers might’ve just had a rough start.

It seems as though the 2015 first-round pick is poised for the best season of his young career yet. Last year was his first full season of MLB, he played in 102 games, OPS’ing .798. His standout .945 OPS over the last stretch is only topped by Paul Goldschmidt, Bryce Harper and Aaron Judge.

Can Rodgers keep it up is a question that we don’t know the answer to, but the talent has always been there, and it’s finally showing out.
