Pat Surtain II says he had “great coverage” and Russell Wilson still beat him

May 26, 2022, 12:59 PM

The Denver Broncos are in the midst of OTAs, and even though practice on Tuesday wasn’t open to the media, the team still released a hype video of the top plays.

Of course these highlights are hand picked by the team’s video department to show the best of the best, but there’s still some interesting things we can glean.

Particularly, Broncos QB Russell Wilson throwing a deep ball to Courtland Sutton with Denver’s No. 1 cornerback Pat Surtain II in coverage. The coverage by “PS2” looked to be excellent, but Sutton still came down with the football. You can watch the play at the :59 mark below.

Surtain met with the media on Thursday at team headquarters, and was asked how hard it is to defend against Wilson, even though it’s only practice and they’ll be teammates when it counts. His answer was eye-opening.

“Speaking of that, he made a throw yesterday on me, it was a great ball. I was in great coverage, and it was just an amazing throw on the route. That’s one of the tendencies he brings to this team,” Surtain said.

When asked to confirm if it was indeed the play the Broncos posted on Twitter of him against Sutton, Surtain said it was. Obviously, these experiences help the second-year player and former first-round pick out of Alabama.

“It helps me a lot going against premier talent like that with a great quarterback and great perimeter players. That helps me as a player build on my game,” Surtain said.

And it’s not just the big arm from Wilson that Surtain is impressed with. His ability to create when the play doesn’t stick to the script is something else that stands out.

“He’s very dynamic and his second-play mentality, where he’s making something out of nothing with his scrambling ability, that’s something that opposing defenses may fear,” Surtain said. “His ability to create plays on his own, that’s something special about him.”

The Denver defense consistently has to face top-tier quarterback talent around the AFC West and throughout the conference. It’s nice that for the first time in a long time, they have one of those QBs as well.
