Rockies sign former National League MVP to massive $182M deal

Mar 16, 2022, 4:41 PM

The Colorado Rockies traded Nolan Arenado and didn’t re-sign Trevor Story, but they’re still spending money.

According to multiple reports, the team will sign former National League MVP Kris Bryant to a massive contract. ESPN’s Jeff Passan has the details.

Bryant, who won the 2016 MVP with the Chicago Cubs, was traded to the San Francisco Giants last season. In 884 career games he’s hitting .278 with 167 home runs and 487 RBI.

Bryant has made four All-Star games in his career, including in 2021. He won the World Series with the Cubs in 2016, the same year he won the MVP.

The Rockies obviously needed a big name and a big bat after trading Arenado before last season and letting Story walk this offseason. As of Wednesday afternoon, Story had still not signed a deal with a new team, but the Rockies inked shortstop Jose Iglesias last weekend, assuring Story’s departure.

Signing Bryant by no means heals the wounds of the departures of Arenado and Story, but it is at leas a start toward making the 2022 Rockies more respectable on the field.
