The Broncos would be wise to bring Melvin Gordon back in 2022

Dec 14, 2021, 11:02 AM

Ever since Melvin Gordon became a Bronco, his relationship with Broncos Country has been flimsy. They loved the hometown hero Phillip Lindsay, who Gordon was brought in to replace. But that wasn’t the only issue.

Gordon was a Charger; that’s a strike against him. Many thought he was way overpaid; that didn’t help. Some untimely fumbles certainly did not help his case.

With all that said, Gordon has done nothing but produce as a Bronco.

The relationship was rocky from the start, but Gordon has been a damn good Bronco. He always has a knack for finding the end zone, is good is pass protection and is a great locker room guy. He has definitely not been the problem with the Broncos offense the past few years.

Now in the last year of his contract, is it in the Broncos best interest to bring him back?

“I’d love to be here,” Gordon said last week at a Broncos press conference. “I don’t think many people want me here, as far as fans, man, I’ve been seeing a lot of stuff.”

Gordon isn’t wrong in saying that many in Broncos Country don’t want him back. The fan base hates his contract. And they love Javonte Williams, Gordon’s current backfield teammate. But it’s in the Broncos best interest to bring Gordon back for the right price and role.

Should Melvin Gordon be brought back at his current contract? No. Paying him $8 million per season would be ridiculous, as it was the first time around.

Should he be the primary running back in 2022? No.

Should he be on this team as a 1B to Javonte Williams 1A? Absolutely.

Gordon has been nothing but productive in his short Broncos career. He’s great in the pass game and scores double-digit touchdowns every year. He needs to limit his fumbles, but there is no question this offense is better with him on it.

If the Broncos can bring him back for the right price, they shouldn’t think twice about it.
