The Broncos unsung hero on defense needs to stay in Denver

Sep 21, 2021, 6:29 AM

The Broncos defense showed up big against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After a rocky first series, the defense got on track and continued to clamp the Jags offense the rest of the game. Rookie Pat Surtain got a pick, Von Miller got another sack, but it was none other than Kareem Jackson who turned the tide of the game for good.

Kareem was what we like to call a “tone setter” against the Jaguars. He was all over the field. One pass deflection, four solo tackles and of course his game-changing interception. At 33 years old, the man still plays like he’s in his prime. He’s the best player no one talks about on the national stage.

This Broncos defense is loaded. Von Miller, Justin Simmons and Kyle Fuller have made NFL All-Pro teams. Pat Surtain look like the real deal as a rookie. And they’re still missing Pro Bowl. linebacker Bradley Chubb. It’s easy to miss Kareem’s impact, but the man has been one of the best Broncos defenders since he arrived in 2019.

Kareem is going to put the Broncos in a tough situation this offseason. He’s an older player, but his leadership and playmaking ability are so crucial to this Broncos defense, especially the secondary. What he means for Justin Simmon’s development, making sure guys are in the right spot, his ability to be around the football, the Broncos would be wise to bring this man back even in his age 34 season.

That was evident on Sunday when the safety helped propel Denver to a 2-0 start.
