The Broncos need to look for an offensive-minded head coach

Dec 8, 2020, 6:32 AM

2020 has not been a good year. And that goes for the Broncos, too.

Now sitting at 4-8, it’s the same old Broncos we have seen of the post-Manning era. It might not be fair to Vic Fangio if the Broncos move on after 2020, but it’s what they need to do.

Fangio was always a red flag hire. In a league that keeps getting younger and more offensively focused, the Broncos chose an old, defensive-minded, first-time head coach.

It never made sense in the first place. If you’re developing a young QB, you at least need good offensive coaching, but it makes the most sense to have an offensive-minded head coach.

Continuity is important when it comes to success in the NFL, but you can’t just keep the wrong guys in power just for continuity’s sake. Fangio was dealt a bad hand, just like Vance Joseph and John Fox before him. This league isn’t fair and just giving Fangio another year for continuity is equal to throwing another year away.

The Broncos invested in the offensive side of the ball. They drafted two wide receivers in the first two rounds in 2020, paid their left tackle, paid a guard and invested a first-round pick in a tight end. Why invest so heavily in the offensive side of the ball for a defensive head coach?

The best thing for Drew Lock’s development would be to pair him with an offensive-minded head coach. After this season, the Broncos need to look at the top-five offenses and try and snag one of the coordinators to be their new head coach.
