Hosts from The Fan make insider’s list of potential Hackett replacements

Nov 9, 2022, 9:21 AM

104.3 The Fan’s Darren McKee coaching the Denver Broncos? It’s not as crazy as it sounds; on Tuesday, 9 News’ and The Fan’s Broncos Insider Mike Klis published a list of “absurdly nonsensical” possible next men up for owner Greg Penner. D-Mac made the cut under “other,” so maybe it is a little far-fetched.

But The Fan’s Chad Brown, Mark Schlereth, Orlando Franklin, and Brandon Stokley all got named by Klis too. And the four carry a pedigree of football knowledge from their playing days, making them much more than gasbags. At least that’s what Colts Owner Jim Irsay believes in hiring ESPN’s Jeff Saturday as new Interim Head Coach—a legendary center from the team’s past.

Klis’ list wasn’t about the best replacements out there for Nathaniel Hackett; his group was the most Saturday-inspired hires in Broncos Country. Given Denver is in a similar situation to Indy with a struggling offense and poor records, could we see the crazy happen? Hey, maybe it’s not so wild, and it works out in the Hoosier State, meaning Penner should circle this story for later

Klis gives Schlereth the fourth-best chance on his list behind local legends Peyton Manning, Dave Logan and Alfred Williams. He likes what Stink brings to the table, given his impressive media career and his successful business ventures, hoping that translates back to the gridiron—where it all started for the Vandal.

Big O has more experience than Saturday does at this juncture. The fellow o-lineman had a coaching internship with the San Francisco 49ers last year before once again sharing his deep knowledge of the game on KKFN.

Hear me out, what if Peyton came back to be the head man, going against his old buddy Saturday on the sidelines, and his OC was Stokley? The former wideout has coaching in his blood, son of former offensive coordinator at Clemson Nelson Stokley. Maybe he builds off what his father did at Southwestern Louisiana as the head coach and takes his big sprinkle of orange knowledge and leads the Broncos turnaround?

Or how about Brown? After his excellent playing career and blossoming career behind the mic, the former CU Buff could bring some defensive grit back to the Orange Crush.

The real question is, what would D-Mac bring to the table?
