Broncos bring in two new running backs as Melvin Gordon misses practice

The Denver Broncos saw another big name name not practice on Wednesday.
While the practice was a light “jog-through,” running back Melvin Gordon wasn’t on the field. After practice, head coach Nathaniel Hackett told reporters Gordon is battling a foot injury.
“Yeah, we’re just taking care of his foot and we’re just making sure he’s good. He’s another one of those older guys. We want to make sure he’s primed and ready for the season,” Hackett said.
It’s unclear when Gordon hurt his foot or how severe the injury may be. But Hackett also didn’t call it a veteran off day or maintenance day, so there’s some concern.
Adding to that is the fact the Broncos signed not one, but two runnings back on Wednesday morning. It could indicate something a little more significant is up with Gordon. Mike Klis has the details.
Smith, Hardy worked out this morning, headed in, got their uniforms and are out practicing. Rookie RB Tyreik McAllister injured yesterday and Melvin Gordon III not put at practice today. #9sports

Stevie Scott actually played one preseason game with the Broncos last year, but was cut after jus a week. JaQuan Hardy spent time with the Cowboys in 2021. Neither will likely make Denver’s 53-man roster, but it’s worth watching if either pops in the preseason.
The signings are in addition to Denver bringing in former Pomona star Max Borghi last week, so the running back room is constantly being shuffled. The good news is Javonte Williams remains the No. 1 back, depending on Gordon’s injury he’s No. 2 and Mike Boone checks in at No. 3.
Hackett said roster moves to address the additions of Scott and Hardy will come later on Wednesday afternoon.
(Update 3:49 p.m.) –
The two corresponding roster moves to make space for Scott and Hardy on the 90-man roster were reported by The Denver Post’s Ryan O’Halloran.

Allen was undrafted out of Alabama and received a significant $180,000 guaranteed to join the Broncos. It was the largest signing bonus out of all the Broncos undrafted free agents, but his season is now over. McAllister was an undrafted rookie running back from Division II’s University of Charleston.
