The Avalanche being mere hours from potentially lifting the Stanley Cup has folks feeling nostalgic.
When Colorado won its first two championships in 1996 and 2001, their fiercest rival along the way was undoubtedly the Detroit Red Wings. The brawls are legendary, the playoff battles still get talked about and the teams truly hated each other.
ESPN finally saw the opportunity to tell the story of the rivalry this year, and will debut “Unrivaled” — a new, two-hour E60 program — on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. MT on ESPN. We wrote about the first trailer a few weeks ago, which you should absolutely go watch right now.
But after you do that, check out a new clip from the documentary that ESPN dropped a few days ago. It features Hall of Fame goalie Patrick Roy talking about why he needed to protect his teammates. And the craziness that ensued.

Goalie fight! Those are incredibly rare and part of what made the Avalanche and Red Wings rivalry so special. You never knew what was going to happen.
If that 95-second clip is what the whole two-hour special is going to be like, sign me up. This will literally be must see television. And the only thing that will make it better is if the Avalanche already have their third Stanley Cup safely secured.
