Phillip Lindsay “would be excited to be back home” if the Broncos called

Apr 25, 2022, 11:07 AM

Could the local kid return to where it all started?

If Phillip Lindsay gets a call from the Denver Broncos, you never know.

“Hey, man, I would be excited to be back home,” Lindsay told The Denver Post’s Sean Keeler over the weekend. “I mean, it’s up the street. My family wouldn’t have to move anywhere. I’d love it.”

Lindsay spoke with Keeler at the CU Buffs’ spring football showcase at Folsom Field. He, of course, was a star at CU and before that at Denver South High School. He went undrafted in the NFL, but eventually turned into a Pro Bowl running back in Denver.

“I love Broncos Country. I love the fans. They’re some of the best fans I’ve ever seen,” Lindsay said.

And the feeling is mutual. Lindsay was electric when used properly in the Broncos offense, especially in 2018 and 2019. Lindsay eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in both seasons and had nine touchdowns and seven touchdowns, respectively. Things fell off considerably in 2020 with the arrival of offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, but so did production for almost every other Bronco.

Last season Lindsay had very little success with the Texans and Dolphins, but only carried the football 88 times between the two teams. On the bright side, there wasn’t much wear and tear on his body.

Javonte Williams is the clear No. 1 running back in Denver and every fan knows that. But could GM George Paton give Lindsay a call to be the team’s backup? It sure feels like Melvin Gordon won’t get re-signed and the Broncos do need backfield depth. Plus, Lindsay would love to play with Russell Wilson.

“Hey, that would be great,” Lindsay told Keeler. “(Wilson), he’s really good. Super good, yeah.”

I’d be open to the idea of Lindsay returning to the Broncos. He’s overcome long odds to make a huge impact on the team once before, why not give him a chance to do it again?
