Clayton: The Broncos must run the football against Washington on Sunday

While general manager George Paton hits the phone on trade talks to fill the problems on the Broncos roster, Vic Fangio works to keep together the offense and defense. And hopefully, to stop his team’s four-game losing streak.
Fangio’s biggest challenge is the rebuilt linebacker corps. But what will be interesting this week is to see what the Broncos do on offense.
The Washington Football Team comes to town and they are one of the most-baffling teams in the league. They are baffling in the sense that they were the second-best defense in the league last year. They are the second-worst this year.
Jerry Jeudy will be back and that will help Denver’s passing game. What will be interesting is to see how well the Broncos can do with the running game. Under the circumstances, running the football is quite advisable.
Fangio knows that Washington coach Ron Rivera will do his best to stop run the run. He was asked if teams are and will be trying to make a concentrated effort to stop the run.
“I still see that,” Fangio said. “That’s part of the things that we met together with over the past few days, trying to figure out a way to get it going. Part of the ways to get it going, too, is to throw it a little better on early downs. We have to have a good mix and hopefully to get some better looks run against.”
The Broncos currently rank 22nd on offense. They are 18th running the football and 16th through the air. Melvin Gordon has 350 yards rushing the ball. Javonte Williams has 320.
Running the ball is important.
