Clayton: Von Miller has justified George Paton’s decision to bring him back

Remember at the beginning of the offseason when there were questions about whether or not the Broncos would pick up the $18 million option on Von Miller?
Some thought they wouldn’t because of the cost. General manager George Paton didn’t give it too much of a second thought, however. Despite Miller missing all of last season with a foot injury, Paton picked up the option.
Imagine how bad it would be for the Broncos defense if he didn’t. On Thursday, Miller was named Defensive Player of the Month in the AFC. It was the fifth time in his illustrious career that he won this award, but the first time since 2016.
He earned it. Miller has had a sack in each of the first three weeks. In the three September games, he has eight tackles, four sacks and a league-best six tackles for losses. He’s been great, which shouldn’t be surprising.
Had Paton not picked up the option, the Broncos defense would be in horrible shape as they enter a tougher part of the schedule. Because of Bradley Chubb’s injury issues and missed starts, the Broncos wouldn’t have an outside pass rusher. If the option wasn’t picked up, the Broncos would be trying to stop Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens with four young linebackers. It’s going to be tough enough with three.
The next question is whether they can bring Miller back for next season. Because he loves being a Bronco, he might not ask for the $18 million or more, but you never know.
Miller is older, but he’s still great. The Broncos have plenty of cap room, so that won’t be an issue. Plus, there could be the possibility of an ownership change.
Miller certainly justified Paton’s decision with his great start to the season. His first three games have been fantastic.
