Denver Broncos release veteran backup QB Jeff Driskel

The Denver Broncos have released veteran backup quarterback Jeff Driskel, per 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis.

Driskel, 28, played just one season for Denver after signing a two-year deal with the Broncos in March 2020.

In three games (one start) for the Broncos, Driskel threw for 432 yards and three touchdowns to go with two interceptions.

Driskel replaced an injured Drew Lock in a Week 2 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, nearly leading a comeback with 256 yards passing, two touchdowns and one interception in the 26-21 loss.

The following week, Driskel made his only start for the Broncos, throwing for 176 yards, one touchdown and interception in a 28-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In late November, Driskel was placed in the league’s COVID-19 protocol after testing positive for the virus. Because of close exposure to Driskel, the team’s remaining three quarterbacks — Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles — were deemed ineligible to play in Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints.

Denver went on to insert practice team wide receiver Kendall Hinton under center, who threw for 13 yards on 1-of-9 passing with two interceptions in the 31-3 loss.
