Broncos, Phillip Lindsay mutually agree to part ways

After three seasons playing in front of his hometown, Phillip Lindsay appears set to say so long to the Mile High City.

The Pro Bowl running back and the Denver Broncos have “mutually decided” to rescind his restricted free agent tender, his agent Mike McCartney posted on Twitter early Thursday, freeing up Lindsay for free agency.

The departure comes less than 24 hours after Denver reached a two-year agreement with running back Michael Boone, who 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis said could compete for the No. 2 running back job behind Melvin Gordon III.

In a series of tweets, Lindsay thanked his fans, teammates and coaches, saying, “I’m very appreciative for my time with the Denver Broncos.”

“As a Colorado kid, I was able to fulfill my dream of playing for my home team,” Lindsay said.

In a statement posted to Twitter on Thursday, the Broncos thanked Lindsay for his time with the organization.

“From a college FA to the first undrafted offensive rookie to make the Pro bowl, you made an incredible impact in the orange and blue,” the statement read.

Undrafted out of the University of Colorado, the Denver South High School product rushed for 1,037 yards for nine touchdowns in 2018, earning the aforementioned Pro Bowl nod. And Lindsay would follow up that season with another 1,000-yard campaign in 2019.

However, injuries and competition with Gordon for reps hampered Lindsay’s 2020 campaign. In 11 games (eight starts), Lindsay rushes 118 times for 502 yards and one touchdown.
