Vic Fangio got his signature victory against Bill Belichick and the Patriots

Oct 21, 2020, 6:37 AM

Vic Fangio finally got his signature win as a head coach. Going on the road to beat the Bill Belichick-coached Patriots is huge for his coaching career. And it couldn’t have happened in a more Vic Fangio-esque way.

The Broncos won with an aggressive defense and a subpar offensive performance. That couldn’t be more in line with Fangio’s philosophical approach to football. Run the ball, play aggressive defense and score no touchdowns, just classic Fangio stuff.

With all the drama leading up to this game – the Patriots’ positive COVID tests, the Melvin Gordon DUI and Drew Lock’s injury – the deck was stacked against Fangio and the Broncos. However, they gutted through it and took home an ugly W, but a W nonetheless.

A signature win is a big deal for a head coach. We had never seen Vic Fangio “outcoach” anyone before, even in victories. But he outcoached Bill Belichick.

Now, this Patriots team is not a typical Belichick team. But to go on the road and beat a Belichick-coached team is a big deal. No matter how ugly the win was, this is a huge boost for Vic Fangio’s coaching career.

Now that Vic Fangio has his signature win as a head coach, it’s time to carry that momentum over to the Chiefs. Though it’s nice the Broncos beat the Patriots, the strategy of Brandon McManus dragging the team to victory is not going to work against Kansas City.
