It’s been tough to be a Colorado sports fan in 2020

Feb 27, 2020, 5:50 AM

It’s been a tough two months to start the new year if you’re a Colorado sports fan. We’ve seen rivals win championships, coaches leave and even players arguing with upper management. Let’s break it down

Denver Broncos: Every Broncos fan was at home watching the NFL playoffs from their couch for the fourth-straight season. I know Broncos Country is getting anxious to watch the orange and blue play in meaningful playoff games in January and February; trust me, those cold January games are the most fun and nerve-racking games all season. Unfortunately, Broncos fans were stuck watching the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl, with the realization that their rivals probably have the best quarterback in the NFL for the next 15 years!

Colorado Rockies: After a disappointing 2019 season for the Rockies, everyone expected Colorado to make some moves in the offseason to get this team back to the playoffs. Well, Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich is smart guy, right? I mean he did go to Harvard. The Winter Meetings came and went, and not a single dollar was spent by the Rockies to improve this team after losing 91 games. With no moves being made, Colorado third baseman Nolan Arenado was not happy as he should be. It’s been reported that Arenado and Bridich had heated discussions and Arenado’s name became brought up in trade discussions. The chances of the greatest third baseman ever remaining with the Rockies for the rest of his career is unlikely and he could be on the move this season. Just think, two years ago, the Rockies were in the divisional round of the playoffs and now they sit here with 91 losses, no money spent to improve the team and the franchise’s best player will probably be traded.

Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche: These franchises have the best chance to bring home a championship and Colorado fans can’t even watch them unless they have a certain television provider! Both teams have young star talent that has everyone excited, but not everyone can enjoy watching them play. I guess everyone will have to wait and see how good these two franchises are when the playoffs start.

Colorado Buffaloes: This is the most-recent story. Just when things feel like they’re moving in the right direction up in Boulder and the newest recruits were finishing up national signing day, things take a dramatic turn. The University of Colorado football program was betrayed and lied to. Former head coach Mel Tucker decided to take the head coaching job at Michigan State. Days before Tucker left for the Spartans, he was telling recruits that he loved them, tweeted out how much he was dedicated to Colorado and was even attending a get together with Buffalo boosters explaining how much he was committed to the University of Colorado. Tucker had the contract on his desk when telling the boosters how committed he was and still back stabbed the Buffaloes.

Yes, it’s been a rough two months to start and Colorado sports fans don’t deserve this punishment. This is arguably the best sports town in America with arguably the smartest fans. We deserve better!

I will say we will see better results the rest of the year.

The Broncos have found their starting quarterback and have tons of money and draft picks to turn the franchise around this season.

The Rockies still have Nolan Arenado on the roster and could see a bounce back year from the pitching staff.

Give it just a little bit more time and everyone will be able to watch the Nuggets compete for a NBA Finals appearance with Nikola Jokic leading the way.

We will also see the Avalanche get back to full strength once the playoffs begin with this team getting healthy at the right time.

The Buffaloes might be struggling on the football side, but keep an eye out for the men’s basketball team competing for a PAC-12 championship and clinching a spot in the NCAA Tournament. We could see the Buffs get into the Sweet 16.

It’s been a rough start to the year, but trust me, Colorado sports will end 2020 on a Mile High note!
