The Colorado Rockies have appeared to lock up another key piece of its roster, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the club and starter German Marquez have agreed on a five-year, $43 million extension.
According to Passan, the deal includes a club option that can turn into a mutual option if Marquez has two top-3 Cy Young Award finishes. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Rockies righty can earn bonuses of $1 million for a first-place finish as well, and $500,000 bonuses for second- through fifth-place finishes.
The deal is set to keep Marquez, who turned 24 late last month, in a Rockies uniform until the 2024 season. He’d earn a $1 million bonus should he be traded before then, per Rosenthal.
Already with a win under his belt in 2019, his fourth season in the majors, Marquez looks to build off back-to-back strong seasons in a starting role for Colorado.
In 2017, Marquez went 11-7 in 29 starts for the Rockies, finishing fifth in National League Rookie of the Year voting with a 4.39 ERA, a 1.377 WHIP, and 3.4 wins above average.
Marquez finished 14-11 in 2018 with a 3.77 ERA, 1.204 WHIP, and a WAR of 4.7.
