If Joe Flacco doesn’t work out as the Broncos quarterback, then what?

The Joe Flacco experiment will truly have to derail next season, says Brandon Stokley, in order for the Denver Broncos to be “one-and-done’ with its veteran quarterback for a second straight year.
But, even if Flacco falters and the Broncos don’t see the on-field product they’d like, the “Stokley and Zach” co-host said it won’t set back the franchise all that much.
“… For a fourth-round pick, you’re taking a shot in the dark here and you’re hoping it works out. If it doesn’t, I don’t think it really sets your franchise back,” Stokley said on Friday.
The Broncos do not owe any bonus money to Flacco in his remaining three years under contract and face no dead cap, per Spotrac.com. Thus, Stokley said, the club has an “easy out” if things don’t work out.
“At least with Flacco and his contract situation, you’re able to say bye and just kind of move on and then re-evaluate the draft class and the free agent class the following year,” Stokley said.
However, Stokley’s co-host, Zach Bye, asked how long Denver can continue to do the “low-risk” thing and bring in free agent quarterbacks — should Flacco not work out — instead of drafting and developing one.
“I believe there’s only one route on the GPS. I think there’s one route. … You’re not going to go into free agency for a third consecutive year,” Bye said.
Stokley said that, indeed, if Flacco doesn’t work out in 2019 for the Broncos, it’s obvious the club does need to go into the draft and find a quarterback.
“You’ve got to draft somebody. It’s obvious,” Stokley said. “I mean, it is so obvious that that is the last thing that they really want to do, especially in the first round. But that’s what you’re going have to do.
