Stokley wants ‘off. coordinator’ for Broncos HC, would gamble on Taylor

Amid the Denver Broncos search for its next head coach, “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley said on Thursday that his preference for the position would be an ‘offensive coordinator.”
Among the five candidates scheduled for interviews, three are defensive oriented and one is an offensive line coach, leaving Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor as the “only option,” Stokley said.
“I’m willing to gamble that he’s the next Sean McVay and not the next Josh McDaniels. That’s what I’m hoping,” Stokley said of the up-and-coming Taylor.
Taylor, who turns 36 in May, has just 11 years of experience as a coach, seven of those in the NFL. But he’s a part of the coaching staff that in 2018 led the Rams to one of the top-ranked offenses in the league, which is why Stokley hopes a little bit of L.A.’s head coach, McVay, may have rubbed off on Taylor.
“When you sit down with him, you have to project how he’s going to be in that locker room. But right now, he is my leader,’ Stokley said.
Taylor interviewed with the Broncos on Thursday in Los Angeles.
One name Stokley said he doesn’t want to be associated with being a Broncos coach next season, however, is Gary Kubiak.
“Look, we had our Gary Kubiak tenure. He’s been around a long time. He was terrific as a backup quarterback here. He was a great head football coach. Won a Super Bowl. But now it’s over,” Stokley said. “It’s time to turn the page and move on. We can just keep hiring the same people over and over. It’s time for a new start.”
There’s been speculation that Kubiak could return to coaching this season, especially after Broncos general manager John Elway said he expected the Super Bowl 50-winning head coach to remain with the club in 2019, which could be in a sideline role.
