Munchak ‘looks like’ the guy, but Broncos may land on Pagano, says DMac

As the Denver Broncos continue to search for their next head coach, “The Drive” co-host DMac said on Tuesday that he believes the team will target “somebody who Gary Kubiak gets along with,” a John Fox-type guy who has been there and demands respect.

Among the names of those who’ll interview with the Broncos, one fits the bill, DMac said: Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak.

“Mike Munchak, well, he looks like that guy,” DMac said. “Then you add Gary Kubiak as the offensive coordinator, and, frankly, that system could last for a long, long time.”

Munchak not only has coached three Steelers to Pro Bowl nods in 2018, but he himself is a Hall of Fame offensive lineman. Also, check off head coaching experience, as Munchak held that title with the Tennessee Titans from 2011 to 2013.

“If you told me that the offensive line coach was excellent … I’d tell you to do whatever it takes to make that guy happy,” said “The Drive” co-host Alfred “Big Al” Williams on Tuesday. “Because if your offensive line is excellent, then the rest of your engine can work.”

The only problem, Munchak has been a popular commodity among teams needing head coaches this offseason, having been linked to the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, and Cleveland Browns as well.

“The problem is these valuable guys are valuable to other teams. We’re not the only one,” DMac said.

Williams questioned why Munchak would want the Denver position, saying it was “not a good job right now.”

“Why would you want the job here in Denver over the job in Miami,” Williams said.

So, instead, the Broncos may have to settle for another candidate who checks off the boxes laid out by DMac: former Indianapolis Colts head coach and Colorado native Chuck Pagano.

“Chuck Pagano would take the job. He’s not as in demand, and he’d be fine working with Gary Kubiak,” DMac said. “So, Chuck Pagano, who has head coaching experience, local ties …”
