Broncos trudge into offseason of uncertainty after loss in 2018 finale

Dec 30, 2018, 10:08 PM

With a 23-9 loss in its season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, the Denver Broncos now trudge into an offseason of uncertainty.

On the heels of back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1972, the Broncos don’t exude confidence at any one of the “fundamental focus points of any organization” — ownership, management, head coach, and quarterback — said “Stokley and Zach” co-host Zach Bye.

“The Denver Broncos are in some of the most uncharted territories in the history of the organization,” Bye said after the game. “Even if you’ve been a fan for 40 or 50 years, you may not have ever seen a period like this.”

Indeed, the 11-21 (.344) record during the past two seasons marks the second-worst two-year stretch for Denver since the 1970 NFL merger.

Bye called it “unfamiliar” and “unsettling” to discuss the Broncos, historically one of the most stable franchises in sports over the half century, as being “on the brink of irrelevancy if they don’t figure it out quickly.”

“No previous success can change the fact that Denver is one of the most irrelevant teams in the current NFL with not much room for optimism,” said “The Drive” co-host DMac after the game Sunday.

On the cusp of the New Year, Monday will likely bring a number of changes to the Broncos organization, on its roster most definitely and likely within its coaching staff.

It will also likely be the beginning of the swan songs for general manager John Elway and president/CEO Joe Ellis, DMac said.

With new ownership “relatively imminent” and both Elway and Ellis nearing the end of their team contracts, the next coaching hire and quarterback acquisition will be the “defining decision of two men who are through-and-through Denver Broncos,” DMac said.

“So, is this time for bold new moves? Probably. Will it happen? Probably not,” DMac said, adding that the “future starts on Monday, and something tells me what’s old will be new again.”
