Pritchard: Broncos need a QB who improves, not just one to develop

Looking toward the offseason and the future of the Denver Broncos organization, some have suggested the team needs to look to draft or otherwise a quarterback to develop.
But on Thursday, “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard said the Broncos need a quarterback who’s looking to improve, not just develop, which he says has a clear delineation.
“You don’t want the Broncos to develop a quarterback. You want a Broncos quarterback to improve, not develop,” Pritchard said. “I think people get that mistaken.”
Pritchard defined “develop” as ‘bring to a more advanced or effective state” and “improve” as “bring into a more desirable or excellent condition.”
The difference, Pritchard said, is you can take a quarterback in the sixth round and develop him into a fourth-round talent. But in order to find a franchise, Hall of Fame-type quarterback, he’s got to have the continuous drive to improve.
“Don’t look for a guy to develop. You’re going to waste your time trying to do that,” Pritchard said. “Look for a quarterback that has no other choice but to improve, and he has no other choice because he wants to be the best. And that’s why that quarterback will always look to improve.”
To Pritchard’s co-host, Cecil Lammey, the difference means the Broncos should be looking for the “answer” at quarterback, not just an upgrade.
“If you are developing your quarterback, you’re fooling yourself. And the Broncos have been doing just that,” Lammey said.
Said Pritchard: “I hope people just don’t fall into that trap that the Broncos need to develop a quarterback. You need to find a quarterback that wants to improve or avoid stopping improving. Because when you feel like you’ve arrived or you know everything and you’re still average, you’re going to have problems at quarterback.”
