Pritchard: Disconnect in Broncos urgency to correct passing woes

Oct 4, 2018, 1:45 PM

After Monday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said teams run to control the ball and throw to score.

Thus far in 2018, the Broncos haven’t had trouble with that first part, rushing the ball for 593 yards, the second most in the NFL.

But Denver ranks 23rd in the league in terms of points and 30th in passing touchdowns.

Moreover, prized offseason acquisition Case Keenum hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in three consecutive games, a stat “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard said Thursday needs to change in a hurry.

“There’s just so much on the line that if it’s acceptable that your starting quarterback can go through three games without throwing a touchdown pass, then what in the hell are you doing?” Pritchard said. “Seriously.

“That’s rookie quarterback stuff or that’s backup quarterback stuff, especially when you watch the tape and you study the tape.”

On Wednesday, Joseph said he’s “not really” concerned that Keenum hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass since Week 1, but rather their concern is “winning football games.”

“How we score touchdowns is my concern — running or throwing — but Case is going to get better and better with time,” Joseph said. “We’re figuring out who we are as an offense. It’s been a month into the season.

“I’ve been proud of how Case has played. Our O-line is playing well, so we’ll see. He’s going to get better and better with time.”

But Pritchard said there’s a disconnect in the urgency to get things on track offensively.

“I don’t know if players and coaches fully realize what this organization wants this year. They don’t want a losing season,” Pritchard said. “They don’t have time to wait on that. They don’t have time for you to figure it out.

“I don’t know why there’s a disconnect on that. Those soundbites like that tell me that there’s no sense of urgency when it comes to their quarterback. But there should be.
