Renck: Broncos believe QB Case Keenum is ‘just hitting his stride’

If the Denver Broncos get the Case Keenum of 2017, Denver 7 Insider Troy Renck said Monday morning, then the club has a “realistic shot” at the postseason.
Keenum, who signed with the Broncos in March for a reported $36 million over two seasons, put up statistically the best year of his young NFL career in 2017.
En route to an NFC Championship game berth, the sixth-year pro earned a 11-3 record as the Minnesota Vikings starter, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns with just seven interceptions.
And Renck, who filled in for Mark Schlereth during “Schlereth and Evans” on Monday, said the Broncos believe Keenum can put a string of similar seasons together in a row.
“They believe internally that he’s just hitting his stride. They’re believing the guy they saw last year can do that a few years in a row,” Renck said.
Don’t make space on the Sports Authority Field at Mile High façade quite yet, Renck said, but the playoffs could be in reach should Keenum perform like he did in 2017.
“I’m just saying if he plays at the level he played at last year — 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions — they have a realistic shot to get in the playoffs,” Renck said. “If he plays anything like the guy he was prior to last season, they’re looking at 6-10 or 7-9.
“That’s the reality of it.”
Last week “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard said Keenum’s impact will be felt by the Broncos, especially considering the down year the club.
“The Denver Broncos were 5-11 last year. If Case Keenum comes here and the Broncos are 8-8, OK, that was impactful. The Broncos are 9-7, Case Keenum was impactful,” Pritchard said. “If the Broncos are at 10-6, winning the division, that’s an impact.”
