Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler said there was “no finger pointing” in his sideline rant during Sunday’s loss to the Washington Redskins, but that he was “trying to ignite the offense.”
“I felt like we were leaving too much out there. We had five possessions on their side of the field in the first half, and we had three points to show for it,” Osweiler said of the second quarter incident, which CBS captured and replayed later in the game. “It’s embarrassing, and it’s unacceptable.
“That’s not high-level, national-level football and I’m a very passionate player. I love this organization and I love playing this game of football and I just express that.”
And on Tuesday, Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said he wasn’t opposed to the fiery sideline speech but rather was encouraged by it.
“We need more players pushing players. We need more players helping our young guys become pros. I’m not opposed to that at all, that’s a good thing in my opinion,” Joseph said.
“The Drive” co-host DMac agreed on Tuesday, saying he’d prefer to have a guy like Osweiler as his backup quarterback instead of someone like the more subdued Trevor Siemian.
“Let’s call it what it is. He is an NFL backup quarterback. So is Trevor. But, I’d rather have my backup quarterback be like Brock Osweiler than Trevor Siemian,” DMac said. “I know I’ve got something with this guy. I know there’s some degree of passion with this guy.”
That kind of passion from a backup quarterback, and seemingly uninterested teammates, is something DMac said he’s seen before in Broncos Country with Tim Tebow.
“I’ve seen this before on the Broncos. Believe it or not, it was in Tebow’s year when they went 4-12. I saw it with my own two eyes,” DMac said. “Tebow had this fire, and it was wasted on the rest of the guys.”
That year, in December, DMac said, “… There were so many players on that team who did not care, who had checked out. And you can rag on Tebow for whatever reason you want, and you’re right. But he was into what he was doing.
Joseph said he wasn’t sure who was listening, that he didn’t see the video of the incident. But DMac instead that, in his opinion, the players Osweiler was trying to spark were “checked out.
“Checked. Out,” said DMac.
