Schlereth: Sunday may be last time we see Lynch as Broncos starter

Head coach Vance Joseph said on Monday the Denver Broncos want to see Paxton Lynch “play with live bullets,” which is why the second-year quarterback will start Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, should he be healthy enough to play.
And with that in mind, Mark Schlereth told Broncos Country on Monday morning to “soak it in” because it could be the last time they see Lynch in the role.
“Based on the organization, based on where (Broncos general manager) John Elway has been, based on the scouting that’s going on, it’ll be probably the last time you get to see Paxton Lynch,” the “Schlereth & Evans” host said.
Schlereth pointed to several reasons why this could be the final go-round for Lynch, including Elway and director of player personnel Matt Russell visiting the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Friday to most likely watch Wyoming Cowboys quarterback Josh Allen play.
Allen, for his part, did not disappoint, throwing for 154 yards and three touchdowns on 11-of-19 passing in the Cowboys 37-14 win over Central Michigan.
Lynch’s injury history, including a sprained shoulder suffered in Week 3 of the preseason that kept him out much of the year and a high ankle sprain that’s kept him out of late, is another concern, Schlereth said.
“You have to learn how to play with the ankle sprain, you have to learn how to play well. It’s not just about playing hurt, it’s about playing injured and it’s about playing well injured,” Schlereth said. “And you’ve got to be able to do that.”
In his career, the 2016 first-round pick has started three of the four games he’s played in, throwing for 538 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions while connecting on 59.8 percent of his pass attempts.
Should the Broncos select a quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft, it’ll be the fourth consecutive year the club has done so — and six of the last seven years.
