If McCaffrey’s available, should the Broncos draft him at No. 20?

Standford running back Christian McCaffrey certainly seemed to be the darling, or at least among a group of them, who shined last week during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
The Colorado native and son of former Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey seemed to impress both on and off the field and locally and nationally.
Christian McCaffrey was unreal today. Some drills it was like he was a senior in high school and everybody else was in 8th grade. #9sports

McCaffrey confirmed today what we already knew – he’s a 1st round player.

IMO, most impressive RB workouts were:
1. Christian McCaffrey/Stan
2. Tarik Cohen/NCAT
3. Kareem Hunt/Toledo

But did McCaffrey’s poise in handling the press help improve his draft stock? Will his less than stellar performance on the bench press push him to the second round? Did he make up for it with his 40-yard dash and pass-catching drills?
The true question, however, is will McCaffrey be available when the Broncos pick at No. 20 in this year’s NFL Draft and should they take him if he does?
Lindsay Jones, USA Today NFL reporter covering the combine last week, said it’s “intriguing” to think what new Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy could cook up for McCaffrey, playing to his wide range of skills out of the backfield.
“I think Mike McCoy can do some really awesome things with a player like Christian McCaffrey. He’s very creative and could find ways to use him,” Jones said.
However, Jones said she doesn’t know if drafting McCaffrey at No. 20 would be the “best allocation of the Broncos’ pick.”
“Would it be a luxury pick necessarily? Is he a guy that would change the offense enough to make them that much better? I don’t know,” Jones said.
Fan Broncos Insider Cecil Lammey, also in Indianapolis for the combine, called McCaffrey’s 40-yard dash “plenty fast” and highlighted his pass catching and general comfort with the weeklong process as strong positives for the young running back.
“The pass-catching drills, the looking passes in over your shoulder, just looking natural and explosive within his movement, looking comfortable within the process,” Lammey told “The Drive” on Friday. “This is a guy that — while other prospects have had meetings and it’s this whirlwind, you get to talk to these guys and they’re kind of all over the place — Christian McCaffrey is having dinner with John Elway, having dinner with Jack Del Rio.
“He’s used to this type of stage, and he certainly shined in the pass-catching drills and the 40-yard dash today.”
“The Drive” co-host DMac said after the performance he didn’t know how the Broncos could pass on McCaffrey if they have an opportunity to grab him at 20th overall — and if he’d even make it that far.
“I don’t think Christian’s going to be around at 20,” DMac said, adding that he’s afraid Denver will miss out on a player of McCaffrey’s caliber especially because he fits into the schemes the NFL is trending toward.
“I think Christian gives you way more flexibility, way more options, just his pass catching alone … Look at the value of the running backs in the NFL. Guys like (New England Patriots wide receiver Julian) Edelman have so much more value,” DMac said.
