Polumbus: Denver Broncos ‘might just trade for Tony Romo’

Tyler Polumbus is not buying the Denver Broncos act anymore in regard to Tony Romo.
The Dallas Cowboys veteran, who had his starting quarterback role stripped from him last season by eventual Offensive Rookie of the Year Dak Prescott, has been the buzz of the offseason thus far.
And conventional thought had interested teams waiting for Dallas to release Romo once free agency starts on March 9. ESPN reporter Ed Werder reported as much, saying the quarterback though he’d be released rather than traded in his quest to once against start in the NFL.
But Polumbus told “Schlereth and Evans” on Thursday that he’s not buying the Broncos being that patient.
“We have gone from open quarterback competition to some sort of major momentum swing out at Dove Valley to where now it doesn’t even look like anybody’s (thinking) Paxton could be in this race,” Polumbus said. “I think not only are the Denver Broncos going to get Tony Romo but I think all this talk about needing to wait until he gets released, I’m not buying it anymore.”
And if Denver has “made up their mind” about Romo, Polumbus said, there’s a logical next step.
“I think they’re going to trade for Tony Romo,” Polumbus said.
Mike Klis, 9News Broncos Insider, told “The Drive” earlier this month that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could try to salvage some trade value regarding Romo, but if that were the case Denver would be out.
If all goes according to plan, and Romo gets a June 1 designation and a March 9 release, Denver could be interested, Klis said at the time.
Since then, talk about Romo landing in Denver has heated up, and Polumbus said Elway can use recently-received compensatory picks as chips to throw into the pot.
“(Elway will) create a tough bargaining position, where he says, ‘Tony, you want to come compete for a championship? OK. Here’s your opportunity. I will trade for you. I will give up one of these two seventh-round compensatory picks that I just picked up, maybe a sixth-rounder. I’ll give up one of those,’” Polumbus said.
In return, Elway would want Romo to give the Broncos “one heck of a team deal.”
“I think the Denver Broncos might just trade for Tony Romo. And Tony Romo, he’d be OK with it, and he’d be willing to renegotiate his deal,” Polumbus said. “Now that would be the key part of this. Tony would have to want to come to Denver, and he would have to want to renegotiate his deal to a team-friendly deal.”
Romo is due $24.7 million from the Cowboys in 2017, who have a dead cap number of $19.6 million.
