Klis: Broncos offense may receive more resources moving forward

As 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis put it, Denver’s pendulum swung far to the offensive side of things in 2013 then back to defense in 2015 and may be set for a return trip in 2017 and beyond.

Klis, joining 104.3 The Fan’s “The Drive” on Thursday said indications, including whom they hired with the coaching staff, point toward the Broncos putting more resources into the offensive side of the ball.

For instance, aside from Denver’s actual offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, the Broncos have former offensive coordinators Bill Musgrave and Jeff Davidson on staff as quarterbacks and offensive line coaches.

“I mean, McCoy, Musgrave, and Jeff Davidson, those are three big-time, well-known offensive coaches that are going to be running the show,” Klis said.

Klis said expect the team to also spend some money on the offensive line, and perhaps tight end, in free agency, along with selecting lineman on both sides of the ball and a returner in the NFL draft.

But, perhaps most importantly, Denver’s offensive overhaul hinges on the play of it’s 2016 first-round draft pick, quarterback Paxton Lynch, Klis said.

“I really think this coaching staff was put together knowing that Paxton Lynch has to be their guy going forward. Now it might not be opening day 2017, but shortly thereafter,” Klis said.

“I think they all feel if they want to get to the Super Bowl again, Paxton Lynch has to be the guy to get them there.”

Klis said the other school of though is that if Lynch is not ready, the Broncos could “put better players around Trevor Siemian,” which he said they think they could win there.

And all this leaves Tony Romo likely look at destinations not named Denver should the Dallas Cowboys and he part ways, as the Broncos “are not all that interested,” Klis said.

“Everything I’m hearing is they’re going forward. They want to go forward with Paxton Lynch,” Klis said. “Now, we’ll see what happens. … But I do think the Broncos are going to push Lynch along this year.”
