Klatt: Broncos offense ‘not creative,’ ‘as vanilla as it gets’

Nov 25, 2016, 2:59 AM

Through 10 games, those who follow the Denver Broncos — fans and others alike — have been waiting for the other shoe to drop in terms of the team’s offensive output.

At No. 14 in terms of total offense in the NFL, head coach Gary Kubiak and the Broncos staff has faced criticism over the production, or lack thereof, coming from the offensive unit.

“We’re all waiting for it, right? There’s something that’s going to happen, whether it’s game plan or schematic, that they’re going to do to throw the opposing defense off,” said Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt. “And they just have not done it.”

Talking with “Schlereth and Evans” this week, Klatt said the Broncos offense kept running the “same, tired stuff over and over and over and over again.”

“We don’t see any (innovation) from this Broncos team this year. They really as vanilla as it gets,” Klatt said.

And with opting to not pursue another quarterback in free agency or draft one highly in the 2015 draft, Klatt said it’s important for Denver to be as “creative as (they) possibly can be” to help out its young gunslingers — whether it’s second-year guy Trevor Siemian or rookie Paxton Lynch.

“They’re not creative at all on the offensive side. It’s somewhat strange because it flies in the face of what the wisdom would be if you’re going to play this way based on what you did with the roster at the most important position,” Klatt said. “It’s a bit odd. There’s got to be a wrinkle.”

Klatt offered that the Broncos should try to “move Demaryius Thomas around” as a potential spark for this offense — to “let his physical ability shine a little bit.”

However, Klatt was critical of Thomas for not really dominating opponents the way he could, and should if Denver wants to make a run to the postseason.

“He’s got to dominate games and dominate secondary players. And he hasn’t done that this year,” Klatt said. “I think he’s maybe been given a little bit of a free pass as everyone in Colorado wants to attack Trevor Siemian. It’s like, what about his high-paid wide receiver who had two or three drops a game when he needs to go out there and dominate and be a focal point of the offense, which he hasn’t been.
